Since all my blogs that I have written have been giving you some information and history of Girl Guides all over the world. I chose the topic because I have experienced Ladybirds, Brownies and Guides! I started Ladybirds in Ireland at the age of 5, and I continued to becoming a Brownie and then a Guide which I quit when I was beginning secondary school. At the moment for my Transition year I am doing community service in my local Brownie guide company which I love. I am doing it every Tuesday, every week for an hour and a half but now it has encouraged me to continue helping voluntarily as I loved being part of Irish Girl Guides.

I would encourage any young boy or girl to join Boy Scouts or Girl Guides or at least try it out for a week or two as it is a learning experience which I enjoyed thoroughly because I learnt a lot of new things like learning to tie a special knot, and learning to cook in the Brownie Guide Cottage which the organizations might visit for a weekend once a year. Not only did I learn a lot of new activities I also made many friends that I am still friends with even after 4years after quitting.

I hope my blogs have helped you learn new information and history about Girl Guides.
As you may now know, Girl Guides has spread all over the country.

The Countries that have their own Girl Guides set up are…
Austria · Belarus · Belgium · Cyprus · Czech Republic · Denmark · Estonia · Finland · France · Germany · Greece · Hungary · Iceland · Ireland · Israel · Italy · Latvia · Liechtenstein · Luxembourg · Malta · Monaco · Netherlands · Norway · Poland · Portugal · Romania · Russia · Slovakia · Slovenia · Spain · Sweden · Switzerland · Turkey · United Kingdom

Another 2 countries that are working towards WAGGGS are… Albania · Azerbaijan

So wherever you travel on holidays or are moving to and you have young children whom are girls, there are over a hundred different countries that your child can join.

This is also similar if you have young children who are boys, as I have not mentioned before that there is a organization for boys which is called Boy Scouts, this is very similar to the Girl Guides but obviously for boys. It teaches young boys new tasks that they would have known before. Both organizations are a learning experience for children from the age of 5.

Brownies
Brownies are usually aged 7-11.
At the beginning they are called the Tweenies, as they are young Ladybirds that have moved up from Ladybirds and before they are enrolled they are called Tweenies, after several weeks in experiencing Brownies, they are enrolled in a short service during one of the Brownie meetings. After they are enrolled they are finally called Brownies. In Brownies, there are 4 groups that are called sixes, which contain 6 girls, called The Pixies, The Elves, The Fairies and The Gnomes. In this group there is a Sixer and a Seconder, these usually are the oldest girls in the group and the 4 other girls in the group are the new Brownies that have been enrolled from being the Tweenies. To the right, is a picture of a young Brownie guide, in her uniform, which you can read in my previous blog.

Guides
Guides are usually aged 12-15.
So as you can see above, once you are old enough to become a Guide, and you are a Brownie, you can be enrolled up into the Guides. With Guides, there are many ways in having a great time and experiencing new things, since they are an older aged group, they are able to go trips, sleepovers to the Girl Guide Cottage, go for hikes and earn badges for your favorite past-times. They also have the opportunities to go on trips abroad to various camps and events. They also have the opportunity to participate in home hospitality in foreign countries where they can really get to know the culture and way of life in that country. Many foreign groups visit us here in Ireland as well. To the right is the Irish Girl Guide Main Logo.

Introduction to Girl Guides

The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) have over 10 million Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 145 countries all around the world. Some of the countries that have this organisation are, Australia, Armenia, Barbados, Chile, Mexico, Portugal and another 139 countries.

WAGGGS was founded in the UK in 1910 by a man called Robert Baden-Powell, he had help from his sister Agnes Baden-Powell. After his marriage in 1912, his wife Olave Baden-Powell took a leading role in the development of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting.

Only a year after the Girl Guide Movement was founded the first official company in Ireland was formed, in 1911 in Harolds Cross. Guiding quickly spread to Cork and Wicklow. At this time there was no border between North and South so Guiding was run as one organisation for all Ireland.

In 1929 Ireland was partitioned into the Irish Free State (26 counties) and Northern Ireland (6 counties) and a separate organisation for the Free State was created from the whole, the Irish Free State Girl Guides.

Ireland became a separate member of WAGGGS in 1932.

There are 4 main groups in Girl Guides...

Ladybirds = age 5-7
Brownies = age 7-11
Guides = age 11-15
Rangers = age 15-21

Introduction

Hey, my name is Penny. This is for my enviromental studies project. For my project, I have to make a blog related to Geography and post a new blog each week with my information about my chosen subject for my blog.

I have chosen to do my project on Girl Guides and where it came from, how it spread and how it is to do with Geography.

Hope you enjoy! (:
